The Red House was built in 1943 in what was then known as Basic City. The charm hits you the minute you open the door and walk in.It is a beautiful home with large rooms, huge windows, and high ceilings, giving it an open atmosphere and lots of personality. The home has been brought back its former glory with great and loving care and attention to detail, including rebuilding floors, walls, ceilings and trim as needed.The home itself is conveniently situated with easy access to I-64 (first exit from Charlottesville and go two miles north, with no lights), and within walking distance of downtown Waynesboro. The three lots that come with the home are bordered by Delphine Avenue, Tenth Street, a creek, and two empty lots behind that back up to a railroad track. Because there are no homes immediately adjacent, there is the feeling of a little paradise within the confines of a small town.Jeff, who did most of the reconstruction, loved to sit in the creek at the end of a long day's work and relax while soaking his feet and naming the fish. The home's location can be very relaxing.Appliances include a side-by-side refrigerator with water and ice in the door, a self-cleaning oven, range, and a dishwasher. A laundry room is hooked up for electric washer and dryer (not included). The shower has jets all the way up, so when you shower, whirlpools of water gently massage your body.The high ceilings, big windows, open floor plan, and large rooms keep the home at a comfortable temperature. You will hardly need to turn the air conditioning on with the windows open! But if you do, there are separate heat pumps for the upstairs and downstairs and an energy-efficient gas heater in the living room.The new hot water heater and electrical panel are in the crawl space under the house. The attic is also empty.Statistics? There are three bedrooms, one bath, 1672 square feet. There are huge closets in the bedrooms.Because of the age of the house, stories abound about ghosts and it being "haunted". We have brought in two spirit investigating groups who have spent a total of over 500 hours investigating, measuring, listening, and studying the recordings and measurements they have. They seem to agree that there is some "energy" there that indicates spirits, but that the energy is not evil or harmful. They accuse the spirits of turning lights on and off, but that is about the extent of what they "do". They seem think there is a girl's spirit there as well as a man, possibly named Chester, and maybe others as well.Personally, although I do believe in spirits, I don't believe this house is "haunted." Neither I nor my family, nor previous tenants who have lived here, have ever heard or seen anything substantial to make us think so. However, the stories do give the house even more personality!The home is one that you need to see and feel to really appreciate. They don't build them like this anymore! Be sure to call and get a tour! I enjoy meeting people and showing it off. (And you are welcome to come "just to check for ghosts")The house will be available to show by appointment only after June 15th.
