LEED is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to promote buildings and communities that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work. LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health.
